Should you buy the Nintendo DSi? What are the things that you can do with it?

By John Klein

The Nintendo DS has been around for quite a while now and has made a lot of sales since then. It has able to sell 149 million unit compared to the Sony PSP which is just 71 million units worldwide. It goes to show that Nintendo is still king when it comes to handheld games. Now with the Nintendo DSi, which is the second refresh of the Nintendo DS, the company is making quite some improvements since the first version.

The Nintendo DSi has a lot of features in common with the DS Lite. The size and form factor is nearly the same and the sizes of the screen are identical too. But it now sports two 0.3 megapixel VGA cameras. It also more storage space and you can expand it via the SD card. The power has also been increased by 4 times so loading times are now shorter and the graphics are smoother. Together with this, a larger version is also released, the Nintendo DSi XL.

The Nintendo DSi XL is roughly the same as its older rendition but the screens are larger and this means better viewing angles. Battery life is also improved. The software has more features like the Flipnote Studio and also the Nintendo DSi Browser for internet surfing. Whatever you have chosen to buy, there are a lot of things that you can now do with the Nintendo DSi aside from loading a cartridge and playing it.

For one, you can now listen to music. It has a 3.5 mm audio jack and the music player supports formats like AAC and MP3. You can even listen to the music on the go while the lid is closed. Although, the Nintendo DSi may not be able to replace your iPod anytime soon, the most interesting feature though is the four distinct sound filters that alter the sound quality and "texture" of a song. You can make it sound like the radio or even remove the lyrics and go instrumental.

If you opted for the Nintendo DSi XL, you also do some net surfing with this particular unit. Even though the actual internet surfing experience is lack-luster and does not support Flash, surfing with the big brother is still fun with smooth and fast rendering. It is one way to get to use up some time with you handheld console.

The new features are welcomed by many fans. There are previous amenities that were removed like playback capabilities of gameboy advance games but it is not much of a deal breaker unless you are a diehard fan. However, Nintendo still proves to be one of the best when it comes to the portable gaming.
